Family Will Sue After Black Woman Who Called 911 to Report Domestic Disturbance Was Killed by Police

A $30 million claim has been filed against Los Angeles County and the Sheriff’s Department by the family of a 27-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot after seeking help during a domestic disturbance.

The tragic event unfolded on Dec. 4 when deputies responded to her 911 call reporting a man's refusal to leave her apartment in Lancaster around 6 p.m.

According to reports, Niani Finlayson sought assistance as a man refused to vacate her apartment, leading to a confrontation witnessed by responding deputies. The Sheriff’s Department stated that during the encounter, she was wielding a kitchen knife, allegedly making threats to harm the man. Subsequently, a deputy shot her as she approached the man with the knife.

Niani was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Deputy Ty Shelton was identified as the officer involved in the shooting.

Attorney Brad Gage, representing Finlayson’s family, initiated the claim against the county and the Sheriff’s Department, citing wrongful death and civil rights violations. He highlighted that Niani had sought help due to being attacked and choked by the man, who also harmed her 9-year-old daughter. The claim emphasized the alleged disproportionate use of force, stating that Niani was sitting unarmed when shot in the back four times, despite posing no immediate threat.

The claim alleges prior instances involving Deputy Shelton and questions why he remains in the department without known repercussions for previous fatal incidents.

In response to mounting concerns, the Sheriff’s Department plans to release body-worn camera footage ahead of schedule for transparency. They underscored their commitment to impartial investigations and adherence to departmental protocols, pledging a thorough review of the incident by various oversight bodies.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for Finlayson’s children, describing her tragic demise as she sought assistance through 911, underscoring the distressing manner in which her life was taken in front of her daughter by LASD deputies. #LosAngelesCounty #SheriffsDepartment #civilrights #policebrutality #wrongfuldeath #lawenforcement #domesticdisturbance #civilrightsviolations #bodycamfootage #investigation
